What to Expect in the First 24–48 Hours
Control Bleeding
- Bite down on the gauze provided for 30–45 minutes.
- Slight oozing is normal. Replace gauze as needed, applying light pressure.
- Avoid spitting or rinsing vigorously—this may dislodge the healing clot.
Manage Swelling

- Swelling peaks at 48 hours, then gradually subsides.
- Keep your head elevated while resting to minimize puffiness.
Pain & Medication
- Begin pain medication before the numbness wears off.
- Take all medications as prescribed including antibiotics if applicable.
- Avoid aspirin, as it may promote bleeding.
Eating & Drinking After Surgery
- Stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce, smoothies (no straw!), mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs.
- Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods for at least 3–5 days.
- No alcohol, carbonated drinks, or straws for 72 hours.
- Stay hydrated with gentle sips of water.
